Shut the Guildhall Square public toilets

We the undersigned petition the council to (1000 characters): Shut the Guildhall Square public toilets due to the disgusting condition they are currently in.

For a long time now, the Guildhall Square/Civic Offices toilets have suffered. No amount of cleaning or change that can be done to them can fix it.

Every time I go there, there is a heavy amount of drug usage - no matter the time of the day. I have witnessed illicit activity there including the use of needles. There doesn't seem to be any policing or cleaning. I have even had accounts from people scared to use them due to the shape they are in.

As well as being a major drug spot, there tends to be no care taken to clean it regularly or fix the delipidated walls. The fact that it lies just beneath the Civic Offices and next to Guildhall makes it so much as worse. What does it say about Portsmouth as a council when one of the worst toilets in the city are right next to the offices as well as a tourist hotspot. A lack of care.

People can use the argument that there are other toilets about around in shops and on Commercial Rd. but that's besides the point. Some people are dependent on these and to lave them in this shape is so disappointing.

As mentioned above, I do not think anything can be done to ward off the large amount of drug users that meet there daily. Any fixes would lead to continued destructions. I think it's time they are closed down for good if they can't be looked after properly.

Council response

Portsmouth City Council has identified the need for an upgrade for these toilets (including the accessible toilets) and a capital budget has already been approved. The works have been tendered and are due to start in the Late Summer.

The lead petitioner has decided to withdraw the petition.
