Purpose

 

To outline the plans for the programme of activities around the D-Day 75th Anniversary and to reflect on the breadth of programme and benefits this will bring to the City of Portsmouth

 

Recommendation

 

To agree to the outline programme for the D-Day 75 Anniversary events and to authorise officers to continue to work with external partners such as the MOD to deliver and support the commemorative events.

That the Cabinet Member agreed the outline programme for the D-Day 75 Anniversary events and authorised officers to continue to work with external partners such as the MOD to deliver and support the commemorative events.

Minutes:

The Partnership & Commissioning Manager, Culture, Leisure & Regulatory Services presented the report and highlighted the following areas:

 

·      June marked the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings.  The City of Portsmouth played a key role in this aspect of World War 2 and it was appropriate that Portsmouth be the focal point for the commemorations and host the UK national event on the 5th June. 

 

·      The theme of the activities from 5th - 9th June would be Remembrance, Reflection and Reconciliation.

 

Councillor Morgan The Cabinet Member Councillor Morgan and Councillor Morgan in his role as the local MP for their work in ensuring that the commemorations would take place.
