Purpose of report

To obtain confirmation of the replacement of the Butterfly House at Cumberland House Museum

 

RECOMMENDED

That the construction of a new butterfly house at Cumberland House Museum at an estimated cost of £130,000 funded from contributions from portfolio reserves be formally approved.

The report was introduced by Rod McLean, Area Development Worker. 

 

Councillor Symes and the opposition spokespeople were all fully in support of the proposal and felt the new butterfly house would provide a much improved environment for visitors.  David Baynes from Canoe Lake Park Support Group who was in attendance, said that the butterfly house appeals to all ages and is integral to Canoe Lake and was fully in support of the proposal. 

 

Members passed on their thanks to officers involved with this project and also to the volunteers at the city's museums.

 

 

DECISION: The construction of a new butterfly house at Cumberland House Museum at an estimated cost of £130,000 funded from contributions from portfolio reserves was formally approved.

Purpose of report

To inform and update the Cabinet Member on the development of an Events Strategy and to seek adoption of the strategy following consultation and revision.

 

RECOMMENDED

 

(1)  To note the importance of events in complimenting and growing the reputation of Portsmouth both nationally and internationally.

(2)  That the attached Events Strategy 2017 - 2021 is approved by the Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport.

The report was introduced by Claire Looney, Partnership and Commissioning Manager. 

 

Councillor Symes said that the events team are doing fantastic work and have delivered a third more events across the city which has helped to boost the income for the city.  Councillor Hunt said that it was important that events are not only held on the seafront and was pleased that more events are taking place in the north of the city.

 

In response to questions officers clarified the following points:

·         Officers look at all assets across the city to host events and consider how to make the best use of these whilst being sensitive to heritage assets.    

·         Volunteering is a key part of the events delivery.  The Great South Run has over 1,000 volunteers as do many of the other large scale events in the city.  

 

DECISIONS: the Cabinet Member

(1)  Noted the importance of events in complimenting and growing the reputation of Portsmouth both nationally and internationally.

(2)  Approved the attached Events Strategy 2017 - 2021

Purpose of report

To present the Archives Development Policy 2016 - 2020 and to seek its acceptance.

 

 

RECOMMENDED

That the Archives Development Policy 2016 - 2020 be agreed and accepted.

The report was introduced by Michael Gunton, Senior Archivist. 

 

The Cabinet Member and opposition spokespeople wished to record their thanks to Michael and his team for their work in achieving the National Archives accreditation for the Archive Service.  The work of the volunteers was also commended by members.

 

In response to a question regarding the archiving of digital photographs and documents, Michael advised that the Corporate Records Manager had been seconded to look at digital preservation across Portsmouth City Council and is liaising with the archive team to ensure that these are archived. 

Rod McLean added that as part of the Capturing the Spirit project in Paulsgrove, officers are working with Portsmouth Museum to produce a heritage archive from the information captured from the Paulsgrove community to capture this information before it disappears.  

 

DECISION: The Archives Development Policy 2016 - 2020 was approved.
