The purpose of the report by the Director of Regeneration is to consider responses to the public consultation on the proposal to implement traffic calming measures to reduce vehicle speeds within Francis Avenue.

RECOMMENDED that the Cabinet Member for Traffic & Transportation approves the implementation of the following traffic calming measures (detailed in appendix 1) in Francis Avenue:

• Two raised tables to the north and south of the junctions with the Francis Avenue junctions with Jessie Road and Devonshire Square

• Six pairs of speed cushions between the Francis Avenue junctions with Devonshire Square and Albert Road.

Michelle Love, Safer Travel Manager, presented the report.  She explained the background to the proposals due to Francis Avenue having been found to have the highest number of drivers travelling over the 20mph limit when a radar survey had been undertaken, and a high level of support for the implementation of the speed reduction measures (80% in the second consultation exercise).

Councillor Stagg, as Cabinet Member, was familiar with the problems in this road and the local support for it, including the involvement of ward councillors. Councillor Stagg wanted to support this scheme due to the child safety benefits and hoped it would be implemented swiftly.  Councillor Chowdhury, as a Spokesperson, also supported these safety measures.
