Councillor Swan declared a non-pecuniary interest in respect of agenda item 3, Culture and City Development Business Plan 2015 to 2018, as she is the Chair of the Licensing Committee and the licensing service is referenced in the business plan.

Purpose of report

This report provides a summary of the priorities, risks, key performance indicators and vision of Culture and City Development in Portsmouth City Council.

 

RECOMMENDED

That the Cabinet Member for Culture Leisure and Sport approves the key priorities and targets set in the business plan.

The report was introduced by Josie Dalling, Business Development Manager.

 

The Cabinet Member said this was a wonderful report.  Councillor Hunt raised concerns with objective 6 in particular the redesign of the tourism/seafront into a regeneration group.

 

 

DECISION

The key priorities and targets set out in the business plan were approved.

Record Breakers: The Summer Reading Challenge 2015 pdf icon PDF 182 KB

Purpose of report

To inform the Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport of the results of Record Breakers: the Summer Reading Challenge 2015; the levels of promotion necessary to maintain levels of participation; the role of volunteers in supporting the Challenge and to propose targeted engagement to drive up participation rates next year.

 

RECOMMENDED

(1)   That in order to increase the numbers of children completing the Summer Reading Challenge next year and in subsequent years,  the Library and Archive Service consults with primary head teachers on delivering additional activity as a traded service in targeted schools, in the summer term. 

 

(2)   That the Library and Archive Service engage with colleagues from Portsmouth Children and Families Social Care, to promote participation in the Summer Reading Challenge as a positive activity for young people.

Members expressed their thanks to the volunteers helped with the reading challenge.

DECISION

To inform the Cabinet Member for Culture Leisure and Sport of the contribution made by community centres to the Council's priorities.

Councillor Swan advised she had attended the AGM at the Fratton Community Centre recently and said that the Fratton trustees do a wonderful job.  At this meeting it had been agreed that it was important to get younger people to become trustees.  Members felt this was very important and asked Chris Richards if she could look into this and whether it was possible to link this with the young ambassador programme.

 

Members thanked Chris Richards and the associations for their hard work to ensure that community centres continue to thrive.
